Three gold donuts appear in Greek mythology. Hipomene bets with Atalanta, a virgin huntress who promised to marry the man who could beat her in a land race. She loses as she picks up three gold doorknobs from Aphrodite that Hipomene puts in her way.

In another case, the garden of Hesperides is the orchard of Hera, where trees grow that give golden apples of immortality. In the place is the dragon Ladão, watchman of Hera against invaders. One of the twelve works of Hercules was to steal gold knobs from the garden.

In another occurrence, Zeus promotes a feast for the marriage of Peleus and Thetis. Being out of the guest list, the goddess of discord Eris places a golden apple in the ceremony, with an inscription that reads "For the most beautiful." Three goddesses desire the apple: Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Zeus remembers Paris as the fairest of mortal men, and knew that he would judge a bull competition. Ares is sent in the form of a bull to participate. Being a god, he was perfect in every way and won the competition.

Zeus now knew that Paris would make good judgment, and sent him the apple, indicating that the goddesses should accept their decision without discussion. Each of them offers Paris an offer to get the apple. Hera offers to be a famous and powerful king. Athena offers to be wise, more than some of the gods. Aphrodite offers you the most beautiful woman as a wife. This is the one chosen, and the woman offered was Helen of Troy, which eventually resulted in the Trojan War.

The apple of Eris is later called the Knob of Discord.
