Creatures - Sphinxes

The sphinx is an ancient mystical creature usually seen as an extended lion - animal with sacred solar associations - with a human head, usually that of a pharaoh. Also used for demonstration of power, as well as the pyramids in Egypt.

Viewed as guardians in Egyptian statuary, sphinxes are described in one of these two forms: Androsfinge (Sphinco Andro) - body of a lion with a person's head; Hierocosfinge (Sphinco Oedipus Rex) - lion's body with hawk's head. The largest and most famous is Sesheps, the Sphinx of Giza, located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile, made in two to the east, with a small temple between its legs. The face of that sphinx is considered to be the head of Pharaoh Khephren or possibly his brother Pharaoh Djedefré, who would date his construction of the fourth dynasty (2723 BC-2563 BCE). However, there are some alternative theories that rewrite the sphinx to the pre-ancient empire - and, according to one hypothesis, prehistoric times.

Other famous Egyptian sphinxes include the alphasic sphinx of Memphis, now located inside the open-air museum there; and the sheep-headed sphinxes (in Greek, cryosphinges) representing the god Amon in Thebes that there were originally some nine hundred.

What name or names the builders gave to the statues is unknown. The inscription on a stele in the Sphinx of Giza the date a thousand years after the sphinx was carved, gives three names of the sun: Kheperi - Re - Atum. The Arabic name of the Sphinx of Giza, Abu al-Hôl, translates as Father of Terror. The Greek name sphinx was applied to it in antiquity. But she has the head of a man, not a woman.
